14 of the Best Quotes on Reading and Books

While I have compiled quotes by various authors - Ayn Rand, Mario Puzo, Rabindranath Tagore and many others, I realized that I should also list some of the best quotes on reading and books. Through reading books you are introduced to thoughts, knowledge and an entirely different world crafted by the author.
I do not want to write a lengthy introduction to this article as these quotes would themselves define how reading novels, short stories, fiction, non-fiction or any form of literary work is one of the most important virtues.

"A book is a dream that you hold in your hand."
~ Neil Gaiman

"A good novel tells us the truth about its hero; but a bad novel tells us the truth about its author."
~ Gilbert K. Chesterton

“A reader lives a thousand lives before he dies, said Jojen. The man who never reads lives only one.”
~ George R.R. Martin

"Whenever you read a good book, somewhere in the world a door opens to allow in more light."
~ Vera Nazarian

“Never trust anyone who has not brought a book with them.”
~  Lemony Snicket

“If one cannot enjoy reading a book over and over again, there is no use in reading it at all.”
~ Oscar Wilde

"If we encounter a man of rare intellect, we should ask him what books he reads."
~ Ralph Waldo Emerson

"Always read something that will make you look good if you die in the middle of it."
~ P.J. O’Rourke

“There are worse crimes than burning books. One of them is not reading them.”
~ Joseph Brodsky

"If you only read the books that everyone else is reading, you can only think what everyone else is thinking."
~ Haruki Murakami

"Any book that helps a child to form a habit of reading, to make reading one of his deep and continuing needs, is good for him."
~ Maya Angelou

“I find television very educating. Every time somebody turns on the set, I go into the other room and read a book.”
~ Groucho Marx

“It is what you read when you don't have to that determines what you will be when you can't help it.”
~ Oscar Wilde

“Books are a uniquely portable magic.”
~ Stephen King

These were some of the quotes by great minds on the importance of reading and books. Cultivating the habit of reading in children at a young age is very important. Even if you had not cultivated the habit of reading books at an early age it is still not late. I end this article with one of the quotes by John Greene - "Great books help you understand, and they help you feel understood."
